Under £5,000 is where buying carefully matters most. There are good cars at this price — plenty of them — but there are also cars being moved on because something expensive is about to go wrong, and telling the two apart is the whole job.
Expect cars roughly eight to fifteen years old with higher mileage. That’s fine. Age and mileage aren’t what kill a car at this price point; neglect is. A well-maintained 120,000-mile diesel with a stack of receipts is a far better buy than a 60,000-mile car that’s never seen a garage.
Two things to do before you buy anything at this level. First, run the free vehicle check — look for mileage that goes backwards, gaps in the MOT record, and advisories that keep reappearing year after year without being fixed. Second, budget for immediate work. Set aside a few hundred pounds for tyres, brakes or a service, because on a car of this age something will need attention sooner rather than later.

They can be. Condition and service history matter far more than price at this level. Check the MOT record for repeated advisories, which usually indicate deferred maintenance.
Allow for tax, insurance and a few hundred pounds for immediate maintenance. Older cars frequently need tyres or a service shortly after purchase.
The free vehicle check shows mileage recorded at each MOT. If a later reading is lower than an earlier one, walk away.
