Buy your next car with total confidence
Key2Car is a used-car marketplace built around you — no commission, ever, and no call centre. This guide walks you through buying safely, and shows you the free tools we give you to check any car properly before you commit.
Your free safety toolkit
Every car on Key2Car comes with the tools you need to check it properly — the same checks you would pay for elsewhere, here for free.
Free vehicle history check
See mileage, tax and MOT records for any registration — completely free, on any car, before you even enquire.
Running-cost calculator on every listing
Each listing estimates the real cost of ownership from your annual mileage — real-world MPG, fuel, road tax, insurance and servicing — so you know the true cost before you fall for the car.
Mileage history
We surface the recorded mileage history for each car, so you can spot gaps or sudden drops that can be a warning sign of “clocking”.
Finance calculator
Work out realistic monthly payments before you start looking, so you only shop for cars that genuinely fit your budget.
Your step-by-step safe-buying checklist
Follow these in order and you will avoid almost every common used-car pitfall.
Set a realistic budget
Look beyond the sticker price. Use the finance calculator for monthly payments, and the running-cost estimate on each listing so fuel, tax, insurance and servicing are part of your budget from the start.
Run a free vehicle check
Before you travel to see a car, run its registration through our free vehicle check to confirm the tax status, MOT and recorded mileage. It takes seconds and can save a wasted trip.
Study the running costs
Open the running-cost calculator on the listing and set your own annual mileage. Two cars at the same price can cost very different amounts to run over a year.
Review the MOT & mileage history
Read through past MOT advisories and failures, and check the mileage only ever increases. Sudden drops or long gaps deserve a proper explanation.
Inspect the car in person
View it in daylight and dry weather. Check panel gaps and paintwork, tyre wear, that no warning lights stay on, and that the VIN on the car matches the V5C logbook.
Take a proper test drive
Start it from cold, listen for unusual noises, and test the brakes, steering, clutch and gears at a range of speeds. If anything feels off, ask about it.
Check the paperwork and the seller
Make sure the V5C is present and the details match, ask for the service history and both keys, and message the dealer directly through Key2Car so your conversation is on record.
Pay safely
Never pay in full for a car you have not seen, avoid bank transfers just to “hold” a car, and always get a signed receipt showing exactly what you bought and from whom.
See what a car really costs to run
The purchase price is only half the story. On every Key2Car listing you can estimate the full yearly cost of ownership based on how far you actually drive:
Set your own annual mileage and the estimate updates instantly — so you can compare cars on what they will truly cost you, not just the price on the windscreen.
Warning signs of a scam
If you spot any of these, slow down. A genuine seller will never rush you or refuse a reasonable check.
